Engagement Hijinks I

November 4th, 2009
by jake

I’m doing a few happy posts so I don’t put up another rant on the world wide web about Question 1 in Maine.  So if you’re looking for a little smile, read on…and if not, to hell with ya.

To those of you who don’t know, my lovely lady friend and I became engaged recently.  It’s a step we’ve been discussing for quite some time but with no firm plans on her part.  Little did she know, she was dating James Bond.

She had mentioned in passing, many moons ago, that her mother had a beautiful ring that had been her great grandmother’s.  My ears pricked up instantly, as I knew there were huge brownie points for using a family heirloom.  I could also avoid the pain and suffering that comes with ring shopping.  So I did what any smart American male does when he is considering marrying his love…asks her father.

I have never been as nervous as I was on Labor Day weekend.  My fiancee’s family always has a large Labor Day party and we have attended the last few.  With an entire weekend at my disposal, I thought I’d have no problem finding a moment to ask her father for his permission and for the ring.  Little did I know that Fate was quietly laughing in the back room at my naivete.

We had just gotten back from lunch and her father realized that we needed to get more ice for all the food we had in coolers sitting in the shade of his shed.  I volunteered to go with him to assist.  My moment had arrived…then Fate slapped me like a cold fish.

“I’ll drive you guys since you had a few beers at lunch,” pipped up my not-so charming at the moment girlfriend.

I panicked as her father quickly acquiesced.  She went inside for something and I turned quickly to her father and asked him point blank.

“B, can I marry A?”

I didn’t even have time to be nervous.  He turned slowly and with a huge grin gave me a bear hug and said yes.  I had done it, asked one of the two people that mattered.  Now came the big kahuna, the whole enchilada, you get my drift.

Awww, such a touching story to read after all of yesterday’s buzz. I’m so happy for the both of you!

  2. Nichole Stevens Says:

Can you do a part II on the proposal?

  3. jake Says:

    Yes, I will be.

Three cheers, mate. I can’t believe you’re getting married!

On ring shopping: It is a massive pain in the ass. I had to pull double duty, as Ang and I found the perfect ring in one store, but to help cover my tracks, we went to many different jewelry stores in order to fake her out. It became a mind numbing process/education on the 4Cs, color, cut, clarity, …something else with a C… cost? I dunno, my brain basically turned to jelly that afternoon.

On asking the old man: I asked Ang’s dad one day while we were chopping wood, like manly men. Tho, I didn’t actually ask him, I more or less told him my intentions, like giving an order, while menacing him with a short woodsman’s axe.

But again, kudos. I’m sure you have my address handy.

[...] Since then I’ve given a lot of thought about what the last year has been like, and in the wake of all that thinking, I’ve found that a lot of my friends are now engaged or have set dates to get married to long-term boy/girlfriends. Hell, even one of the writers on here, a lifelong friend of mine, is getting married this summer. [...]
